Introduction to the Nursery
Tales of ghosts, hauntings and psychic phenomena have the power to scare me at the best of times, but add children to the mix and it’s just a whole new level of hair-raising.
Take for instance, ghost children. There’s something incredibly troubling to me about them. Why do they linger? Why haven’t they found their parents on the other side, or a kindly spirit to help them on their way to the light? Don’t they realise that they’re deceased? Surely they must feel lonely without their family around them, and the thought that they are trapped on this plane of existence looking for their loved ones, saddens me no end.
Then there’s the topic of haunted toys. Remember the clown on the chair at the end of the kid’s bed in the movie Poltergeist? Why have that in your child’s room in the first place? Ok, it’s a rhetorical question for me because I suffer from coulrophobia (clown phobia) and it was my worst fear realised! That said, I enjoyed the movie immensely!

There are numerous cases of haunted or possessed toys throughout history; one of the most recent being that of “Robert the Haunted Doll”. He’s a harmless looking, hand-made fellow, large at 40” in length (just over 100 cm), dressed in a sailor’s suit and clutching his own teddy. You can visit him right now at the Martello Gallery Key West Art and Historical Museum in Florida. If the stories are anything to go by, he’s quite an active chappy!

Another intense dislike of mine (sorry in advance to all the enthusiasts) are porcelain dolls. I have an incredible aversion to them and they have creeped me out ever since I can remember. Perhaps it’s because they look so lifelike, but are so lifeless…and some collectors love to accumulate them by the dozen and display them, row upon row….their eyes all staring out….it doesn’t take much imagination to see a head turn, does it…eek!

For the truly brave, there are whole websites dedicated to selling haunted dolls and toys. I’m really not fussed on finding out how haunted a doll is, but if any of you are and are planning on purchasing one, I’d love to hear from you. In fact, I’m sure we all would!
Still in the nursery and one subject that I find endlessly fascinating is that of psychic children. I’ve had my own children experience things they can’t explain and there are stories of children out there with quite remarkable psychic talents too, such as the ability to vividly remember details of past lives (take a look at Paranormal Manor’s Family Graveyard to read a great article by David Mc on this very topic), the ability to see auras and heal illness for example.
A great TV show I used to watch whenever I could get the opportunity, was ‘Psychic Kids’, featuring the wonderful Chip Coffey. He and his psychologist partner in the show Lisa Miller, dealt with a complicated subject matter with incredible sensitivity, an open mind and above all kindness towards the children and their families, many of whom, had trouble initially believing that their children had any ability at all.
Watch this space for my upcoming series of articles on psychic children, also known by some as Indigo, Crystal and Rainbow children.
As you can see, there is PLENTY of activity going on in Paranormal Manor’s nursery, so step inside if you dare!
